What does Oppo think of the HRV?
I went and just sat in one at the dealership yesterday. I like it. It’s a contender for my wife’s next car if we take the new car/60 month payment leap.
She ‘liked driving her sister’s 04 Forester, and the seating position is quite similar.
I like the swept up character line on the side, from under the front door handle up to the rear hidden handle. You can tell they might be taking notes from Mazda. The tails would look more at home on an Acura, and I’d prefer something more slim, but I can tolerate them.
I also really like the padded center console, that is slim, so it doesn’t take up too much space, and covers a cubby full of USB ports, and 12v outlets. I also like that it has an overall more traditional layout, instead of Honda “I’m a spaceship” dashboard from the Civic.
Another thing I find appealing is the curb weight. At just under 3100lbs for the EX AWD, it’s pretty lightweight for a modern AWD car compact car. I mean that puts it 100lbs lighter than my 91 Galant Vr-4
Compared to the OG CRV the HRV is
(1998 CRV LX AWD 5 speed, compared to 2016 HRV LX AWD CVT)
172lbs lighter
9hp/1ft/lb more powerful
EPA rated 8-9 mpg better.
.9 inches wider
.5 inches shorter (wheelbase)
8.5 inches shorter (overall) I’d speculate a lot of that difference is due to the first gen’s externally mounted spare tire, and actual bumpers.
2.7inches lower overall
.9 inches lower (ground clearance)
So basically the HRV is Honda’s attempt at fixing the CRV’s model bloat, and I’m okay with that.
(I used Edmunds, and Honda’s official site for reference)

The HRV is taller Fit. On paper it should work well. Then again the infotainment (can we please stop calling it that?) system is trash.

Actually just went and drove it and the CRV and the Fit on Saturday. The HRV looks great in my opinion. I like a lot of the styling. But it kinda felt cheap and underpowered. I didnt care for the CVT very much.
I would rather spend the little extra money and get the CRV instead. Its leaps and bounds ahead of the HRV in refinement and comfort

My initial impression is I like it a lot more than, say, the Chevy Traxx.

Saw one in person and I liked it, for what it was. Seemed like a decent amount of space for its size, and shorter roof made task access easier

I just can’t imaging driving the new CRV. the look so... boring. to me. You an tell the HRV targets a younger crowd, and in my case it worked. Plus for the price of a base FWD CRV you can get an LX AWD HRV, which has a few more options, including alloy wheels. I mean I’m not gonna spend 23 grand and drive home on steel wheels.
It mostly a case of right size/right price for me. and For us the HRV just works better.

HRV affects millions of people every year and is the leading cause of...oh wait...its a car?!

The wife likes the Trax too, our local dealer has a bright blue one that I’m trying to pull her away from lol. The Trax IS more expensive(constantly 1,000 bucks more apples to apples) , and IMO ugly, so it would need to be a lot better to beat the HRV in my mind.

Ignoring the Ew FWD argument, when it came out I thought it was a great entry into the growing smaller SUV segment.

My sister is getting hers delivered on the 10th, the Honda dealer in Cinci she takes her accord to for service only had an EX AWD in grey and she wanted either blue or purple so now she’s getting a blue one fresh from the factory. I’ll probably have driving impressions when she’s back home in late june

I’m gonna get rid of my E38 and get a EX 2wd con manuel

but here’s the weird part. Overall... it’s shorter than a Fit. at the highest point the HRV is about 2 inches taller, but the roof slopes so much that at the end of the rear door, it’s actually shorter. and it feels shorter on the inside since it doesn’t have mini van seats.
Is the Fit more practical, cheaper overall, and just plain more sensible.... YES YES and YES. However my wife thinks the HRV looks a lot better, and I have to agree.

A friend just bought a black one. I think she got a base fwd and yeah its not a looker. I’d probably say the HRV is better looking than the Trax or the Fiat 500 but not as good as the Renegade or the CX-3

then lower it, put in a k20, and put a Civic badge one the back?

The HRV looks great for a CUV. The Fit is the one I’d suggest all day. Stupid fun to drive, great gas mileage, incredible spacious inside, and the CVT actually
isn’t that bad.

The CX3 is also of interest, but IDk when it will be available there isn’t even a builder on Mazda’s website yet. Another big thing is, we have a Honda dealership 2 miles away, while the closest Mazda, VW, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan dealerships are just over an hour’s drive away. I don’t really want to own a car that I have to drive 2 hours just to get any warranty/recall work done.
As far as the Reneged is concerned, unfortunately she HATED the look of it. She wants a re that will make her fell “cute”. and I get that.

yup CVT overwise...but you get flappy paddles on the EX-L....

I also suggested the Fit. a lot. but she’s pretty much ruled it out :(. and I’m not going to push her to buy a car she doesn’t like looking at, even if it makes the most sense.

Yep.
The lineup goes: LX MT FWD, LX CVT FWD, LX CVT AWD, EX MT FWD, EX CVT FWD, EX CVT AWD, EX-L CVT FWD, and EX-L CVT AWD.
That means you can only get the manual transmission on the LX and EX trims and only on FWD models.

Doesn’t really motivate me either way.
I wish something this size was actually performance-oriented... even better yet, a slick 3-door shooting brake or fastback 3-door, with ground clearance, torque-vectoring AWD, and a performance transmission (manual or automated-clutch, not slush-box auto or CVT.)
I badly wish Subaru’s XV Crosstrek, a competitor to this, had WRX and STI derived guts, and a bit sharper and cleaner on the styling.

I couldn’t agree more. I do wish the HRV had a turbo, or V6 option. Even a not so performance oriented turbo with 180-ish HP. And if the made a lower HRV, and called it a Civic Wagovan, you bet ur butt I’d buy it.

I really dislike it. The styling isn’t coherent at all IMO and the powertrain will most likely be unremarkable.

I know. Unfortunately my wife isn’t looking for an exciting car. Just a blue car, that will last her at least 10 years, and has heated seats. And hopefully she’ll end up with something I can tolerate or even enjoy a bit.

I’m sure it will be, and I like it more than a CRV, well a CRV made after 07. The 07-current CRV is the reason the trem “model bloat” was invented.

The main reason I don’t like the juke is the how little interior space it has for how large it is on the outside. I mean the HRV is also a bit guilty of this but not as bad. the rear of the Jukes cabin is so freaking narrow compared to the rest of the car, and they chopped off so much of the roof line that it’ loses almost all use able cargo space in the rear, which is important when your thinking about owning a car for more than a day. Nissan made a choice to take “style” over utility and in this case is hasn’t paid off.

Where I live, it’s sold out until the end of the year. And people continue buying it...
I would personally have one of these instead. Turbo with 173hp and a 6-speed manual.

Yeah, I have to agree with you the Juke has no rear space.
